What’s Going On, March 16, 2012

Baptism Sunday will be on Easter Sunday, April 8, in both worship services.  Throughout the history of Christ’s Church, Easter has been an important time for baptisms.  We will remember the significance of our baptisms and baptize anyone not previously baptized who desires to receive the sacrament of baptism.  If you are interested in receiving baptism or believe God is leading you to have your infant/child baptized, talk with Pastor Dan and plan to attend the Connections Orientation on Sunday, April 1.

Connections Orientation is for anyone interested in joining the church as followers of Jesus Christ.  The orientation will be Sunday, April 1, at 10:00 am in the Fellowship Hall.  New Members will be received on Easter Sunday, April 8, at either worship service, or another date can be arranged as needed.  Let Pastor Dan know if you are planning to attend the orientation.

Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday.  Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.”  The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan.  Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection.  In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism.  Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others.  Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a “mini-Easter” and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the
Resurrection.

During our worship services in Lent, our children will be collecting change to give to Change for Children, one of our Holston Conference ministries.  Each year, churches give loose change to benefit children’s ministries in the Holston Conference and in Africa.
