News and Announcements for the Week of June 1

Hope for South Sudan.  Today we are invited to give a special offering to support our Holston ministries in South Sudan.  At the upcoming Holston Annual Conference, Nancy Forrester, our Lay Member to Annual Conference, will present our church’s offering along with the other 900 Holston churches.  Our Holston goal is to raise $175,000 for these ministries.  You can make a check payable to Bluff City UMC and mark “South Sudan” in the memo line.  See the bulletin insert for more info.

On Communion Sundays, usually the first Sunday of each month, we collect a special offering to share with our brothers and sisters at the Robinson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.  Claiming our oneness in Christ Jesus and to help bridge the racial divide in our culture and because of our shared Wesleyan heritage, we support that congregation with a gift of $100 per month.  During Communion, you can bring your offering forward.  You can make a check payable to Bluff City UMC and write “AME Zion” in the memo line.

During our 11:00 am worship, for Prayers of the People, everyone is invited to write prayer celebrations or concerns on the back of the blue Connection Card and place it in the offering plate during the Offering.  Pastor Dan will retrieve the cards during our worship service and share the concerns aloud.  Please indicate clearly on the card if you do not wish for a particular concern to be shared aloud.

Annual conference will be held June 8-11 at Lake Junaluska, NC.

Pastor Dan will be in North Carolina from Friday, June 6, to Sunday, June 8, to officiate his niece’s wedding.  And then at Lake Junaluska, NC, for the Holston Annual Conference.  He will return on Thursday, June 12.  In case of emergency, please contact our Lay Leader Mike Miller at 423-538-8886.

We would like to thank the church for all they did for the Finney family during the loss of William Finney, Jr.  It was greatly needed and appreciated.  Prayers, food, visits, and calls is what got us through the toughest time.

Thanks to all who have contributed to the Hands On Mission food buckets for Zimbabwe!  Together we are contributing 8 food buckets toward our Johnson City District goal of 300.   The food buckets are put on a semi-truck and taken to Annual Conference along with the contributions of the other 11 Holston district churches.  We then pray over them before they are shipped to Africa.  Please hold in your prayers those who will receive this much needed aid and our missionaries working with them.

Sunday, June 8, is Invite A Friend Sunday.  We would like each person who regularly attends worship to be praying specifically for someone and to invite them to come to worship that Sunday.  We will celebrate Invite A Friend Sunday the second Sunday of each month.  Of course, you can invite a friend to come any time, but we hope you will make a special effort for Invite A Friend Sundays.

There will be dinner for children and youth each Wednesday night at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall.

There will be a Vacation Bible School meeting on Sunday, June 8, at 12:30 pm after the 11:00 service.  All who will help, please p lan to attend as it is quickly coming upon us.  Thanks for all who will help.

Life Groups have launched!  There are currently three groups:  D3 Women’s Health group led by Samantha Gray and Jane Bellamy; Sisters of Strength Women’s group led by Jin Lane and Joan Williams; and a men’s group led by Mike Miller and Tony Lunden.  Please use the blue Connection Card to sign up for one of the groups by listing in the “My Next Steps” section the names of group leaders for the group you are interested in, and place the card in the offering plate during worship.  If you have an idea for another type of Life Group not listed, please indicate it in that section on the Connection Card.  Please see the bulletin insert for more info.
