TODAY IS THE FIFTH SUNDAY!  At Holston Home for Children this is a day for rejoicing.  At this moment, children are being fed, nurtured, and given a safe place to grow.  Because of the generous offerings given by donors like you, children encounter hope for a better future.  You can help us continue in our mission to provide hope and healing to children and families struggling with life’s challenges.  Please give generously today and help us change lives for tomorrow.

Life Groups have launched!  The current  groups are:  D3 Women’s Health group led by Samantha Gray and Jane Bellamy; Sisters of Strength Women’s group led by Jin Lane and Joan Williams; a men’s group led by Mike Miller and Tony Lunden; and a Singles/couples group led by Pastor Dan and Samantha Gray and Dan and Lelia Perry.  Please use the blue Connection Card to sign up for one of the groups by listing in the “My Next Steps” section the names of group leaders for the group you are interested in, and place the card in the offering plate during worship.  If you have an idea for another type of Life Group not listed, please indicate it in that section on the Connection Card.

Men’s Breakfast and Life Group Meeting—Next meeting is Saturday, September 6, at 8:00 A.M. in the Fellowship Hall – All men are invited to a wonderful breakfast provided by our UMW Circle. A donation of $7.00 would be helpful to them for funding their many  ministries. Our meeting will include a time for getting to better know each other, a devotion, and planning for inward and outward mission projects. Please notify Tony Lundin or Mike Miller at least by Thursday, September 4,  if you plan to attend.

New Life Group for Singles and Couples.  We have begun a new Life Group!  Based on Acts 2 and modeled by the first Christians, Life Groups meet regularly to allow the group members a time of sharing a meal, fellowship, praying together, growing together, caring for one another, and serving together.  This new group is for male and female adults, as singles or as a couple.  We do not plan for the group to focus on couple or marriage or family issues, but want to begin a group that couples can be in together.  If there is enough interest, we could launch another group later that focuses on marriage and family issues.  But that is not this group.  This is open to any adult, and you are always welcome to bring someone new.  Pastor Dan and Samantha Gray will co-lead it the first year, with Dan and Lelia Perry also providing leadership.

Children are welcome to come and play with other children, but we will not have programming for them.  We meet on the first and third Tuesday.  Our next meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 6:30 pm at the Gray’s home.  Hope you can join us!  Let Pastor Dan know if you can come pastordangray@gmail.com or 423-956-3524.

Financial Stewardship Update: With an increase in ministries during the summer and an irregular attendance pattern in summer, which is typical of most congregations, our congregation is hoping that members can “catch up” on their giving to the General Fund.  Your tithes and offerings to the General Fund support our various ministries, facilities upkeep, personnel, and operating expenses. As of July 31, 2014, our General Fund figures are:

Total income: $69,284.78
Budgeted income: $78,813.00
Total expenses: $75,540.51

While we are behind in our budgeted (General Fund) giving, your tithes and offerings are still ahead of last year by about $1500; our General Fund  expenses are less than the budgeted amount; and we have reduced our General Fund deficit  to      -$8132 (as of 8/13/14). We encourage our ministry teams to “think twice” about spending and make sure the expense is something our church really needs. We also want to celebrate that you have also been very generous with special offerings and designated giving, sharing over $6000. Thank you so much for your faithful giving! We encourage you to consider whether you need to “catch up” in your tithes and contributions to the General Fund, or perhaps you can give more, so that our  ministries may continue strong and growing. Our desire is not that we will get  something from you, but what we hope for you — that you will honor God with your money and  experience the joy of generosity in supporting the work and ministries of God. There is nothing more important that you can give to.

Today is Promotion Sunday, in which we celebrate our children and youth moving up in Sunday School.  As a congregation, we have pledged to love and nurture them in the faith.  We are grateful for our Sunday School teachers and children’s ministry and youth ministry adult servants who give tirelessly to reveal God’s love to our children and youth.  Please remember them all in your prayers.

On Communion Sundays, usually the first Sunday of each  month, we collect a special offering to share with our brothers and sisters at the Robinson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.  Claiming our oneness in Christ Jesus and to help bridge the racial divide in our culture and because of our shared Wesleyan heritage, we support that congregation with a gift of $100 per month.  During Communion, you can bring your offering forward.  You can  make a check payable to Bluff City UMC and write “AME Zion” in the memo line.

Sunday, August 10, is Invite A Friend Sunday.  We would like each person who regularly attends worship to be praying specifically for someone and to invite them to come to worship that Sunday.  We will celebrate Invite A Friend Sunday the second Sunday of each month.  Of course, you can invite a friend to come any time, but we hope you will make a special effort for Invite A Friend Sundays.

We will soon see a new roof put on the Cox House, with other improvements as well.  The Holston Conference Trustees are paying the costs of these improvements, which will come to about $25,000.  We are grateful to Jane Riley, Jack Hurlbert, and the Cox House Team for serving as faithful custodians of our heritage landmark.
