SUNDAY AT THE COX HOUSE
On Sunday, August 10, at 10:30 AM, there will be a combined morning service at the historic Edward Cox House on Sells Road. In case of rain this event will be held on August 24. Please make plans to join your church family for the service and a church-wide picnic afterward. Bring a dish (or two) and drinks to share. Bring your lawn chairs!
Sunday School will meet at 9:00 AM at the church.
Help is needed on Friday, August 8 at 8:00 AM for a quick surface cleaning of the Cox House.
2015 Budget requests are due in the church office by September 1, using the budget request form. Ministry team chairs— please plan a budget meeting for your team in August.
Today is Promotion Sunday, in which we celebrate our children and youth moving up in Sunday School. As a congregation, we have pledged to love and nurture them in the faith. We are grateful for our Sunday School teachers and children’s ministry and youth ministry adult servants who give tirelessly to reveal God’s love to our children and youth. Please remember them all in your prayers.
On Communion Sundays, usually the first Sunday of each month, we collect a special offering to share with our brothers and sisters at the Robinson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. Claiming our oneness in Christ Jesus and to help bridge the racial divide in our culture and because of our shared Wesleyan heritage, we support that congregation with a gift of $100 per month. During Communion, you can bring your offering forward. You can make a check payable to Bluff City UMC and write “AME Zion” in the memo line.
Life Groups have launched! There are currently three groups: D3 Women’s Health group led by Samantha Gray and Jane Bellamy; Sisters of Strength Women’s group led by Jin Lane and Joan Williams; and a men’s group led by Mike Miller and Tony Lunden. Please use the blue Connection Card to sign up for one of the groups by listing in the “My Next Steps” section the names of group leaders for the group you are interested in, and place the card in the offering plate during worship. If you have an idea for another type of Life Group not listed, please indicate it in that section on the Connection Card. Please see the bulletin insert for more info.
The 3D Life Group, led by Samantha Gray and Jane Bellamy, will meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 5:30 pm in the Wesley Center. The next meeting will be Wednesday, August 14.
The Sisters of Strength Life Group Meeting will be held the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Fellowship Hall from 11:00 AM—1:00 PM. The next meeting will be August 21.
Men’s Breakfast and Life Group Meeting—Next meeting is Saturday, September 6, at 8:00 A.M. in the Fellowship Hall – All men are invited to a wonderful breakfast provided by our UMW Circle. A donation of $7.00 would be helpful to them for funding their many ministries. Our meeting will include a time for getting to better know each other, a devotion, and planning for inward and outward mission projects. Please notify Tony Lundin or Mike Miller at least by Thursday, September 4, if you plan to attend.
The Connections Team will meet Tuesday, August 5, at 2:00 PM in the Willing Workers’ Classroom. Team Chair is Jin Lane and members are: Joan Williams, Bobbie Warden, Elaine Good, Delores Williams, Mildred McClellan and Elsie Thompson, Joyce Durham, Lelia Perry, Beverly Smith, Mike Miller, and Dan Gray.

Sunday, August 10, is Invite A Friend Sunday. We would like each person who regularly attends worship to be praying specifically for someone and to invite them to come to worship that Sunday. We will celebrate Invite A Friend Sunday the second Sunday of each month. Of course, you can invite a friend to come any time, but we hope you will make a special effort for Invite A Friend Sundays.
We will soon see a new roof put on the Cox House, with other improvements as well. The Holston Conference Trustees are paying the costs of these improvements, which will come to about $25,000. We are grateful to Jane Riley, Jack Hurlbert, and the Cox House Team for serving as faithful custodians of our heritage landmark.
New Life Group for Singles and Couples. We are starting a new Life Group! Based on Acts 2 and modeled by the first Christians, Life Groups meet regularly to allow the group members a time of sharing a meal, fellowship, praying together, growing together, caring for one another, and serving
- This new group is for male and female adults, as singles or as a couple.
- We do not plan for the group to focus on couple or marriage or family issues, but want to begin a group that couples can be in together. If there is enough interest, we could launch another group later that focuses on marriage and family issues. But that is not this group. This is open to any adult. Pastor Dan and Samantha Gray will co-lead it the first year, with Dan and Lelia Perry also providing leadership. Children are welcome to come and play with other children, but we will not have programming for them. We expect the once per month gathering to last about 2 hours, including dinner. At our first meeting on Tuesday, August 26 at 6:30 pm in the Gray’s home, we will consider whether the 4th Tuesday is the best date for the group, and whether to begin at 6:30 PM or earlier each time. Hope you can join us! Let Pastor Dan know if you can come—firstname.lastname@example.org or 423-956-3524.
