Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which began on Ash Wednesday , Feb. 18, and ends on Holy Saturday, April 4. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten , which means “spring.” The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter . It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a “mini-Easter” and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection.

During our worship services in Lent, our children will be collecting change to give to Change for Children , one of our Holston Conference ministries. Each year, churches give loose change to benefit children’s ministries in Holston Conference and in Africa. And each year, several groups receive that pocket change in the form of grants. Change for Children grants support new and existing ministries with economically disadvantaged children, from birth to age 12, and their families. Holston churches and related United Methodist agencies are eligible for these funds.
The book Autopsy of a Deceased Church is available in the church office for purchase for $5. This book is currently being read by our Leadership & Vision Team and has generated significant interest.

Confirmation classes will begin for youth in the 7th grade and older, starting Wed., April 1. Confirmation is the opportunity for a young person to “confirm” or profess his/her faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Baptism is not a prerequisite and can be done prior to or on Confirmation Sunday. We will meet each Wednesday night from 6:45 pm to 8:45 pm on the youth floor, through May 20. We will have our Confirmation Sunday celebration on Pentecost Sunday, May 24. To participate in Confirmation Sunday, you may only miss one class. If you have any questions, please see Pastor Dan.
Confirmation Mentors are Christian adults who encourage and support young people going through the Confirmation process. Perhaps a note of encouragement from time to time, a phone call, an ice cream outing, etc. If you are interested in being a Confirmation Mentor, please see Pastor Dan.
In our Easter Sunday worship, we will celebrate baptism. Baptism is one of the our two sacraments—an outward sign of God’s inward grace at work in our lives. It marks our new life in Christ when we receive Him as Lord and Savior, and our initiation into Christ’s Church. If you have not been baptized and would like to do so, please see Pastor Dan.
