Some highlights from the Church Council on August 16:

  • Approval of the name for our property next door, based on your vote — the Carrier Hope House .
  • Approval of an ad hoc team to create a bigger presence for our congregation at Heritage Days . This umbrella team will be chaired by Mike Miller and will coordinate participation of groups and interested individuals.
  • Approval of Michael Forrester as the SPRC Chair, our personnel team.
  • Approval of hiring a youth ministry intern for 5 hours per week, subject to obtaining pledges or contributions to cover 9 months of compensation at $200 per month. As of our Church Council meeting, we have $1600 of the $1800 pledged! If you would like to give a designated contribution , please use an envelope for cash or write a check payable to the church marked “Youth Ministry Intern.”
  • The Hospitality Campaign needs about $9000 to finish our projects of getting a new marquee and making parking lot improvements.
  • Approval of payment of about $50,000 from our Door Beyond capital campaign funds toward our loan debt on the Carrier Hope House property.
  • Approval of spending up to $1000 to move the sound system in the Sanctuary to the right side (facing toward the pulpit), removing the last two pews on the right side. This change will provide a nicer welcoming space and fellowship area as one enters and exits the Sanctuary, and help us accommodate the entrance and exits of caskets. Funding is provided from our Helen Webb Thomas account via our Money Market account.

News and Announcements for the Week of August 15

We celebrate the music ministry of Kim Lundin.  Kim has faithfully served as our Choir Director and Organist for more than a year. Last Sunday was Kim’s last official day. She has resigned the position to allow herself more time with family and to address the professional demands of her full-time teaching work. Kim will continue to be active in the choir and serve God through our congregation in various ways, including continuing as Ministry & Missions Chair. We are so grateful to Kim for her dedicated service and pray that God will continue to bless her and Tony and Mary.

We welcome David Estep as our Choir Director and Organist. While a long time friend of our congregation who has blessed us in many ways, David officially began last Sunday.  David is a wonderfully gifted and talented musician with a large heart for Jesus Christ and His mission through our church. We are so excited to have David join our staff!

News about the status of our district-supported Buffalo Mountain Camp and Camp Bays Mountain (this is one of the ministries we do together through our United Methodist connection):

Our new Camp Director Jeff Wadley has hit the ground running. Since his appointment in June, he has appeared in front of numerous groups.

The Camp Board of Directors has chosen the camp’s new name: Camp Bays Mountain.  Our goal is to host day camps in the summer of 2016. We know this is ambitious, but we are working hard toward making that happen.

The Buffalo Mountain Camp property has been listed for sale. We have several interested parties and we are pursuing those options. At the same time, we hope to close on the Bays Mountain property soon.

Finally, we have hired a consultant to help us in our financial campaign so that we will soon be able to offer the full camp experience.

Please continue to be in prayer for the board, for Jeff Wadley, for our capital campaign, and for all those who will be served and nourished by Camp Bays Mountain.

News and Announcements for the Week of August 2

Please note a new order of worship in our Traditional Worship Service, with a new starting time of 10:55 am . Ushers , please note to bring the Offering forward to the Communion table after you have collected it, without waiting to the end of the Offertory; please bring the Offering forward even if the Offertory is special music or a solo. The Doxology has been moved to the beginning of the service.

On Communion Sundays, usually the first Sunday of each month, we collect a special offering to share with our brothers and sisters at the Robinson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church . Claiming our oneness in Christ Jesus and to help bridge the racial divide in our culture and because of our shared Wesleyan heritage, we support that congregation with a gift of $100 per month. During Communion, you can bring your offering forward. You can make a check payable to Bluff City UMC and write “AME Zion” in the memo line.

Our second Sunday of each month is Invite A Friend Sunday. We would like each person who regularly attends worship to be praying specifically for someone and to invite them to come to worship that Sunday. Of course, you can invite a friend to come any time, but we hope you will make a special effort for Invite A Friend Sundays.

The Sulphur Springs Camp Meeting is begins this evening in the camp shed at 1432 Gray Sulphur Springs Road, Jonesborough,  TN.  This year’s preacher is Reverend Dr. Darris Doyal with a them of “Body Work” for the camp meeting.  A mini concert will be held at 6:00 pm each evening with the kickoff concert featuring Loretta Bowers.  A youth Gathering will be held at 6:00 pm Sunday for music and worship.    Also at 6:00 pm Sunday is a special event for children ages 5-9 with pizza, Bible stories, singing, games, and more.  Camp meeting will begin each night with congregational singing led by Ramona Bird at 6:30 pm, followed by worship at 7:00 pm.  A nursery will be provided each night for ages infant through four.  An ice cream social will follow Monday night’s service.

The Wednesday Adult Faith Studies will not meet the remainder of July.  We will resume the meeting in August when the choir resumes practice.

On the first Sunday in August, everyone is invited to bring an example of your talent(s) or representative symbol of them, and lay on the altar during Communion.  Examples of what you might bring : if you quilt, bring a small quilt; if you can, bring a canned good; if you write music, bring one of your musical scores, etc.  On the fourth Sunday, you may pick up your item from the altar.

If you would like to request a hymn, please turn your request into Kim, Jane or David and we will try to work  it into one of the services.
