Today is our second Sunday in Advent. Advent is a season of four weeks including four Sundays that prepare us for Christmas. Advent derives from the Latin adventus , which means “coming.” The season proclaims the comings of the Christ — whose birth we prepare to celebrate once again, who comes continually in Word and Spirit, and whose return in final victory we anticipate. The Advent wreath is a simple circle of evergreen branches, a sign of life without end; its four Advent candles encircle a central white Christ candle.
On Communion Sundays, usually the first Sunday of each month, we collect a special offering to share with our brothers and sisters at the Robinson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. Claiming our oneness in Christ Jesus and to help bridge the racial divide in our culture and because of our shared Wesleyan heritage, we support that congregation with a gift of $100 per month. During Communion, you can bring your offering forward. You can make a check payable to Bluff City UMC and write “AME Zion” in the memo line.
Our second Sunday of each month is Invite A Friend Sunday. We would like each person who regularly attends worship to be praying specifically for someone and to invite them to come to worship that Sunday. Of course, you can invite a friend to come any time, but we hope you will make a special effort for Invite A Friend Sundays.
Thanks to all who have made Generosity Commitment pledges to support the mission of Jesus Christ through our congregation in the coming year. If you have not had the opportunity to consecrate our personal financial giving commitments for the coming year, you can place your yellow Financial Giving Commitment Card in the offering plate during worship, or deliver it to the church office.
If you or your Sunday School class have chosen a Hopeful Heart child, please see Kim Lundin before you leave the church today so she can assign the child to you or your group. By checking with Kim, the Missions Team can keep a record and assure that every Hopeful Heart child has a Christmas.
THERE WILL BE NO CHOIR PRACTICE ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9!
At our last Annual Conference, our delegates pledged that we would encourage each church member to give 10 hours of service this year to children in poverty in our community. We hope that you are working toward that goal, and will encourage that in your Sunday School, Life Group, UMM, UMW, Circle of Faith, youth ministries, children’s ministries, etc.
Wednesday Night meals are open to the entire church as well as children and youth. Our meal this Wednesday will be ChickenNuggets, Mac & Cheese, Corn Salad and Dessert. Donations are needed to supply the kitchen as well as to continue feeding our youth and children. All funds for the kitchen are by donation only.
