News and Events for May 22

Today is Trinity Sunday, a celebration of the Triune nature of God that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Today is also Peace With Justice Sunday, which is one of our six special Sundays in our United Methodist Church. Peace with justice witnesses to God‘s demand for a faithful, just, disarmed, and secure world.

One-half of the offering given will stay in our conference to develop ministries of peace with justice; the other half will go to the denomination to be used worldwide in developing such ministries. To give an offering for Peace With Justice, make a check payable to our church and write “Peace With Justice” in the memo line; or place cash in an envelope and write “Peace with Justice” on the envelope.

Today is also Heritage Sunday . Observed on the third Sunday of May (to correspond with Aldersgate Day, May 24), this day calls The United Methodist Church to honor its heritage by committing itself to the continuing call of God known and spread by Charles and John Wesley, along with others the early Methodist movement reached and with whose denominations we are all joined as The United Methodist Church.

We also celebrate Communion today. On Communion Sundays, usually the first Sunday of each month, we collect a special offering to share with our brothers and sisters at the Robinson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. Claiming our oneness in Christ Jesus and to help bridge the racial divide in our culture and because of our shared Wesleyan heritage, we support that congregation with a gift of $100 per month. During Communion, you can bring your offering forward. You can make a check payable to Bluff City UMC and write “AME Zion” in the memo line.

Our second Sunday of each month is Invite A Friend Sunday. We would like each person who regularly attends worship to be praying specifically for someone and to invite them to come to worship that Sunday. Of course, you can invite a friend to come any time, but we hope you will make a special effort for Invite A Friend Sundays.

Good Samaritan Ministries is having a fundraiser with Buffalo Wild Wings during the  months of June, July and August.  If you mention Good Sam Ministries when you pay your check, 10% of the amount will go to Good Samaritan  Ministries of Johnson City.   Let’s support this worthy ministry.

Also, Good Samaritan Ministries  will be having their back to school picnic on July 31.  They are in need of school supplies ( i.e., paper, backpacks, glue sticks, pens, pencils, etc.).  These can be dropped off at the Johnson City location which is located in the old Johnson City Power board  building at 100 North Roan Street.
