News and Events for November 27

Today is our first Sunday in Advent. Advent is a season of four weeks including four Sundays that prepare us for Christm as. Advent derives from the Latin adventus, which means “coming.” The season proclaims the comings of the Christ — whose birth we prepare to celebrate once again, who comes continually in Word and Spirit, and whose return in final victory we anticipate. The Advent wreath is a simple circle of evergreen branches, a sign of life without end; its four Advent candles encircle a central white Christ candle.

United Methodist Student Day is one of six churchwide Special Sundays with offerings of The United Methodist Church. United Methodist Student Day calls the church to support students as they prepare for life in uniting faith with knowledge. The special offering provides scholarships for qualified United Methodist applicants.

Today is our second Commitment Sunday. You are invited to pray over your commitment to generosity and financial giving for next year. We ask that you consider the Biblical expectation of tithing (10% of your income) as a spiritual matter, recognizing that God as Creator “owns” it all and we are mere stewards; and recognizing that the spiritual practice of tithing is meant to help restore in us the image of our generous God. In worship, we will receive your Commitment Card for your expected generosity in 2017.

Would you like to give gifts to the families in the Family Promise program this Christmas?  We have been asked to buy gift cards instead of clothing, toys, etc., and they will be distributed equally to the guests.  Please bring your gift cards to Betty, Dan or Joan Williams by December 13th and Joan will take them to the Center.  Thank you!

Clean-Out Challenge. As part of our Defying Gravity worship series, you were challenged to clean out a drawer, closet, room, or area of your home and see how it feels. The ease or difficulty of discarding things you no longer use will tell you a lot about the degree of financial gravity you’re experiencing. During worship today, we will invite you to bring it forward to “let go” of it, and place it at the altar. For things that can be re-used, we will take them to one of the local thrift store ministries like Salvation Army.

There will be Poinsettias for purchase for a cost of $7.50 each.  If you would like to purchase one in memory /honor of someone, please see Elaine Good or Betty Malone. Deadline for ordering is Wednesday, December 14.   They will be in the Sanctuary and Wesley Center  on Sunday, December 18 and 25.

AmazonSmile. If you shop at Amazon.com, please consider using AmazonSmile and selecting our church as your preferred charitable organization. AmazonSmile donates 0.5% of the price of eligible AmazonSmile purchase to the charitable organization you select. When you want to shop at Amazon, access AmazonSmile at the website https://smile.amazon.com , and use your regular Amazon user ID and password. The shopping experience is identical to Amazon.com, and it does not cost you more. Thanks!

Attention 3-D Members—The December meeting will be a Christmas brunch on Saturday, December 17 at 9:00 a.m. at the home of Jane Bellamy.

Several years ago, donations were made to a designated fund for the children’s bell choir program (current balance of $194.62) and to a designated fund for the children’s rotation Sunday School ministry (current balance of $102.53).  We have not done these particular  ministries since at least 2008 and perhaps before; and do not anticipate doing them again.  We would like to move these funds to the Designated Children’s Ministries fund to be available to more  generally support our ministries with children.  If you donated any amount to either the children’s bell choir program or the rotation Sunday School, please contact Pastor Dan to discuss this matter.
