News and Events for January 1

Thanks to Dan Perry for sharing our message today.  Pastor Dan is on vacation.

Today is Epiphany Sunday , our Sunday before the Epiphany (January 6). Epiphany is the last day of the 12-day Christmas season that begins at sunset on Christmas Eve. The celebration of Epiphany focuses on the “appearing” or “revelation” of the newborn Messiah. We observed His birth at Bethlehem on Christmas Eve. We contemplated the mystery of the Word made flesh and dwelling among us on Christmas Day. On this day we join the church’s wonder as the very constellations reveal the birth of Messiah, and the powers of this world are revealed for their self-preservation and violent resistance to the saving work of God for all. The Season After Epiphany begins January 7 and lasts until Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. The Season After Epiphany has two major missional tasks: calling people to discipleship and getting the church ready for its work of preparing people for a life of discipleship throughout the Season of Lent.

Thanks to all who have made Generosity Commitment pledges to support the mission of Jesus Christ through our congregation in the coming year. If you have not had the opportunity to consecrate our personal financial giving commitments for the coming year, you can place your yellow Financial Giving Commitment Card in the offering plate during worship, or deliver it to the church office.

Several years ago, donations were made to a designated fund for the children’s bell choir program (current balance of $194.62) and to a designated fund for the children’s rotation Sunday School ministry (current balance of $102.53). We have not done these particular ministries since at least 2008 and perhaps before; and do not anticipate doing them again. We would like to move these funds to the Designated Children’s Ministries fund to be available to more generally  support our ministries with children. If you donated any amount to either the children’s bell choir program or the rotation Sunday School, please contact Pastor Dan to  discuss this matter .

News and Events for December 18

Today is our fourth Sunday in Advent. Advent is a season of four weeks including four Sundays that prepare us for Christmas. Advent derives from the Latin adventus, which means “coming.” The season proclaims the comings of the Christ — whose birth we prepare to celebrate once again, who comes continually in Word and Spirit, and whose return in final victory we anticipate. The Advent wreath is a simple circle of evergreen branches, a sign of life without end; its four Advent candles encircle a central white Christ candle.

Today and next Sunday, we will receive a special offering for the Dollars for Scholars program to benefit Camille Gray. The United Methodist Dollars for Scholars program involves matching support from a student’s church, the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation (UMHEF ), participating United Methodist-related schools like Emory & Henry College where Camille attends, and participating UMC Conference Foundations like the Holston Foundation . Here’s how it works: (1) our church supports the student with $1,000 sent to UMHEF on a church check; (2) UMHEF will match that $1,000; (3) Emory & Henry College will match with $1,000; and (4) the Holston Foundation will match $1,000. The potential scholarship total is up to $4,000. Make checks payable to Bluff City UMC and put Dollars for Scholars in the memo line. We need to send the church check to UMHEF by January 1.

Thanks to all who have made Generosity Commitment pledges to support the mission of Jesus Christ through our congregation in the coming year. If you have not had the opportunity to consecrate your personal financial giving  commitments for the coming year, you can place your yellow Financial Giving Commitment Card in the offering plate during worship, or deliver it to the church office.

News and Events for December 3

Today is our second Sunday in Advent. Advent is a season of four weeks  including four Sundays that prepare us for Chris tmas.

On Communion Sundays, usually the first Sunday of each month, we collect a special  offering to share with our brothers and sisters at the Robinson  Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. Claiming our oneness in Christ Jesus and to help bridge the racial divide in our culture and because of our shared Wesleyan heritage, we support that  congregation with a gift of $100 per month. During Communion, you can bring your  offering forward. You can make a  check payable to Bluff City UMC and write “AME Zion” in the memo line.

Our second Sunday of each month is Invite A Friend Sunday. We would like each person who regularly attends worship to be praying specifically for someone and to invite them to come to worship that Sunday. Of course, you can invite a friend to come any time, but we hope you will make a special effort for Invite A Friend Sundays.

Would you like to give gifts to the families in the Family Promise  program this Christmas?  We have been asked to buy gift cards instead of clothing, toys, etc., and they will be distributed equally to the guests.  Please bring your gift cards to Betty, Dan or Joan Williams by December 13th and Joan will take them to the Center.  Thank you!

There will be Poinsettias for purchase for a cost of $7.50 each.  If you would like to purchase one in memory /honor of someone, please see Elaine Good or Betty Malone. Deadline for ordering is Wednesday,  December 14.   They will be in the Sanctuary and Wesley Center  on  Sunday, December 18 and 25.

Rockhold Food Pantry will be distributing hams along with their regular food supplies on Saturday, December 17th.  Monetary donations to help cover the cost of the hams would be appreciated and will be collected Sunday, December 11th.

Church Council will meet on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 6:30 pm.
