News and Events for June 4

Today is Pentecost , which is one of our Christian high holy days. Pentecost is also a Jewish festival that falls on the fiftieth day of Passover. In Biblical times, Jews from all over the Roman Empire gathered in Jerusalem for the festivities of Pentecost. On the Pentecost after Jesus’ resurrection—ten days after Jesus had ascended into heaven—the apostles and other believers were gathered together in one place, when they were suddenly empowered by the Holy Spirit to preach the gospel. They went out into the crowds and preached in the native languages of all the people present, creating quite a stir. Peter seized the opportunity to address the crowd, preached Jesus’ death and resurrection, and won several thousand converts. These events are recorded in Acts 2:1-41. We have a special guest today, Pianist Julie Davenport.  WELCOME!

On Communion Sundays, usually the first Sunday of each month, we collect a special offering to share with our brothers and sisters at the Robinson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.  Claiming our oneness in Christ Jesus and to help bridge the racial divide in our culture and because of our shared Wesleyan heritage, we support that congregation with a gift of $100 per month. During Communion, you can bring your offering forward. You can make a check payable to Bluff City UMC and write “AME Zion” in the memo line.

Our second Sunday of each month is Invite A Friend Sunday. We would like each person who regularly attends worship to be praying specifically for someone and to invite them to come to worship that Sunday. Of course, you can invite a friend to come any time, but we hope you will make a special effort for Invite A Friend Sundays.

Jen Rickert, Local Volunteer Coordinator for Appalachia Service Project (ASP) will be present during Sunday School (10:00 am to 10:45 am) in the Fellowship Hall next Sunday, June 11, to give a presentation on local ministry opportunities with ASP. ASP is a Christian home repair ministry that serves poor people in several states in Appalachia, including Tennessee and Virginia. ASP is headquartered in Piney Flats. We hope that Sunday Schools will attend her presentation in lieu of their regular class.

You are invited to a farewell reception for Walter and Lisa Weikel on Sunday, June 18, 4:30—6:00 PM at Gray United Methodist Church, 2108 Oak Street, Gray, TN   37615.  Walter is projected to be appointed to First United Methodist Church, Morristown after Annual Conference.

Drop in at any time during the event, or come and stay for the duration.  Cake, punch and finger goods will be provided by local church United Methodist Women units.  There will be a basket available for those who wish to drop off a card or note for Walter and Lisa.

There will be a spaghetti luncheon on Sunday, June 18 immediately following the 10:55 Service.  This will be a fundraiser for the Czech team who will be leaving for the Czech on July 4.

There will be a Trustees Meeting on Tuesday, June 13 at 6:30 pm in the Willing Worker’s Classroom.  Trustee Members are:  Jack Hurlbert (Chair), Donnie Rader, Elaine Good, Jane Riley, Bruce Stewart, Bill Durham, Jay Altman, and Pearl Carrier.

Several years ago, donations were made to a designated fund for the children’s bell choir program (current balance of $194.62) and to a designated fund for the  children’s rotation Sunday School ministry (current balance of $102.53). We have not done these particular ministries since at least 2008 and perhaps before; and do not anticipate doing them again. We would like to move these funds to the  Designated Children’s  Ministries fund to be available to more generally support our  ministries with children. If you donated any amount to either the children’s bell choir program or the rotation Sunday School, please contact Pastor Dan to  discuss this matter .
