News and Events for June 25

We welcome Rev. Robert and Carolyn Hankins to worship today.  Bob is the son of L. R. and Florence Hankins, and along with siblings James, John Paul and Iva Lee, spent his early years in parsonages in St. Paul, Virginia (1935-1937), Rural Retreat, Virginia (1937-1943) and Bluff City, Tennessee (1943-1949).  He graduated from high school in Marion, Virginia in 1953,  Asbury College in Kentucky in 1957 and  Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey in 1960 in preparation for his years of service as a Pastor in the United Methodist Church.

He served as a Student Pastor from 1955 until 1960 when he was ordained.  During his years in ministry he served churches in Ohio (three years), Connecticut (seven years), and New York (35 years).  He  also served as a Chaplain at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Montrose, New York for nine years.

Since retiring to Whiteville, North Carolina in 1999 he served the UMC as an interim pastor for a year.  At Whiteville UMC he is a member of the Chancel Choir and teaches Christians Under Construction, a church school class he has led for 15 years.  In addition he has taken an active part in leading mission work teams to Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.

Bob and Carolyn will soon celebrate their 55th year of marriage. Their daughter Donna Hankins-Hull is associate pastor at First UMC in Little Rock, Arkansas.

 Choir will be on vacation all of July and the first two Sundays in August, July 9—August 13.  Choir practice will resume on August 16.

The Leadership and Vision Team will meet Tuesday, June 27 at 6:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall.  Team Members are: Dan Gray (Chair), Nancy Forrester, Lelia Perry, Bobbie Warden, Tony Lundin, Carole Miller, Jane Bellamy, Elaine Good, Mike Miller, Lana Butler, Samantha Gray, Dan Perry, Jack Hurlbert and Michael Forrester.

 Please hold our Youth Mission Team in your prayers:  Kahtrina, Noah, Matthew, and Michael Forrester.  They have joined with Piney Flats UMC from June 22—25 to serve the victims of the fires near Gatlinburg.  Thanks to Taylor Lee for her work organizing the tip!

Please hold in your prayers the Czech Mission Team including Tommy Forrester,  Jenae Morrissey, Kayla Thompson, JJ Mains, Britni Mains, and Kailee Brumfield.  They will share the Gospel with the people of Protovin from June 30 to July 10.
